The SS&A Ovens and Murray Football Netball League wish to advise the date for the 2018 SS&A OMFNL Grand Final has been rescheduled to Sunday 23 September.
In 2017, following consultation and agreement with both the TDFL and the HFL, the O&M moved from its traditional timeslot of the Sunday directly after the HFL Grand Final to the following Saturday which was spare due to the AFL’s introduction of a bye round prior to the AFL finals series. The change resulted in the three grand finals being held over three consecutive Saturday’s, allowing each league its own weekend to showcase its premier event.
The release of the Tallangatta & District Football League’s (TDFL) 2018 fixture and the TDFL decision to introduce an additional bye round has resulted in the TDFL Grand Final moving one week later to the Saturday which the Hume Football League (HFL) Grand Final occupied in 2017. As a result, the HFL have indicated their preference to move the HFL Grand Final one week later in the season and approached the OMFNL regarding the potential clash with the OMFNL Grand Final.
The OMFNL’s premier event was initially scheduled for Saturday 22 September, however the O&M have worked collaboratively with the HFL to ensure there are no clashes between the three feature grand finals.
Whilst disappointed with the need to adjust its publicised date, OMFNL General Manager Sean Barrett felt it was the best outcome for local football and netball following the TDFL’s move.
“Our preference was for each local league to have its own weekend for its respective Grand Final, it worked well this year” said Barrett.
“We’re certainly disappointed with the TDFL’s approach, we received no consultation or correspondence regarding any proposed changes to the structure of the finals fixturing for 2018”.
“The move of the TDFL’s doesn’t just influence the neighboring leagues, it has a significant impact on local fans and stakeholders such as media and sponsors that have strong interests across all three competitions”.
“We understand the predicament this change poses to the HFL, and as such, have agreed to return to the Sunday grand final for 2018 as we feel this is the best outcome for local football and netball”
