Season 2018 will commence under lights at Lavington Sportsground with the Panthers to host cross-town rivals Wodonga Bulldogs on Good Friday. Easter Saturday features two enticing matches with Wodonga Raiders to host last year’s premiers Wangaratta at Birralee Park. Wangaratta Rovers and Corowa-Rutherglen, two sides that will be looking to work their way up the ladder in 2018, will face-off at WJ Findlay Oval in Wangaratta. On Sunday, North Albury will travel to McNamara Reserve to face Myrtleford whilst in perhaps the match of the round Yarrawonga will host last year’s grand finalist Albury at Lonsdale Oval, Mulwala.
The grand final rematch between Albury and Wangaratta shapes as an early season highlight, with the Tigers to host the Magpies at Albury Sportsground in round 3.
Round 4 is the first split round of the season, with two games to be held on the first weekend including the first night match to be hosted in Myrtleford. The Saints will host Wangaratta Rovers. Anzac Day features the traditional rival games between North Albury and Albury at Bunton Park, whilst Wodonga will host Wodonga Raiders at Martin Park in what shapes as an intriguing contest between the two Wodonga based clubs. The second weekend of the split round offers another tantilising clash with the stand-alone game a rematch of the 2017 SS&A Cup Preliminary Final between Wangaratta and Yarrawonga.
Queen’s Birthday weekend offers another blockbuster round with Lavington hosting Albury, Corowa-Rutherglen facing North Albury, Myrtleford playing Wodonga, Wodonga Raiders taking on Yarrawonga and the Wangaratta derby to be played as a stand-alone fixture on the Sunday.
SS&A Ovens & Murray Football Netball League General Manager Sean Barrett says the 2018 draw offers positives for each member club.
“It’s important to provide a fixture that offers positives for every club and I’m confident we’ve been able to deliver that for 2018”.
Barrett says the league is now preparing for the new season after undertaking the extensive process in preparing the draw.
“It’s a challenging process developing the fixture, there’s a number of drafts produced and scrutinized heavily to achieve the final result and we try to satisfy as many of the club requests as we can”.
“We’ve managed to avoid any clashes with the two Wangaratta teams and the two Wodonga teams playing at home on the same weekend, whilst also avoiding having Albury, Lavington and North Albury playing at home on the same weekend which is a huge positive”.
The league will continue to hold their annual Community rounds, with White Ribbon Round scheduled for round 13 on Saturday 14 July. The O&M will again be working with the Red Cross Blood Service before announcing dates for this round.
