2019 SS&A Ovens and Murray Football Netball League Fixture
The 2019 Fixture will commence with two ‘season opening’ matches to be held prior to the conventional Round 1 schedule. Lavington Sportsground and Wangaratta’s Norm Minns Oval will host matches on Saturday 30 March with the Panthers to host rivals North Albury in a day game whilst the Magpies will face-off against Corowa-Rutherglen as a night fixture.
“With Easter and Anzac rounds falling consecutively it means we won’t have the early split round over Anzac Round which allows us to push Round 1 back a week and be a little innovative with other aspects of the fixture” said League General Manager Sean Barrett.
The game between Wangaratta and Corowa-Rutherglen has been moved from Round 4 whilst the Lavington and North Albury fixture has been pulled forward from Round 9.
“The season opener matches provide Wangaratta with a second night fixture early in the season, with the other game benefiting both clubs by providing Lavington with an additional early home game and allowing North Albury a bye over the weekend the club are hosting the 2019 National AFL Deaf Football Carnival at Bunton Park”
Easter shapes as a bumper round for fans with a host of blockbuster games in Round 3. Lavington and Wodonga Raiders feature in the Good Friday night fixture whilst Easter Saturday has the Wodonga Bulldogs hosting Albury at Martin Park with Corowa-Rutherglen welcoming North Albury to John Foord Oval in Corowa. On Easter Sunday, two clubs looking to climb the ladder in 2019 will feature at Mcnamara Reserve with Myrtleford facing off against a new look Wangaratta Rovers, whilst in perhaps the match of the round Yarrawonga will host last year’s grand finalist Wangaratta at Lonsdale Oval, Mulwala.
Five night games feature over the opening month, with Lavington and Wangaratta hosting two each and Myrtleford set to host their second ever night fixture in Round 2 against the Wodonga Bulldogs.
Anzac Day features the traditional rival games between Albury and North Albury at Albury Sportsground, whilst Wodonga Raiders will host Wodonga at Biralee Park in what shapes as an intriguing contest between the two Wodonga based clubs.
Queen’s Birthday weekend offers another blockbuster round with Yarrawonga hosting Albury, Myrtleford playing Wangaratta, Wangaratta Rovers taking on Wodonga and Corowa-Rutherglen facing Wodonga Raiders.
SS&A Ovens & Murray Football Netball League General Manager Sean Barrett says the 2019 draw offers positives for each member club.
“It’s important to provide a fixture that offers positives for every club and I’m confident we’ve been able to deliver that for 2019”.
Barrett says the league is now preparing for the new season after undertaking the extensive process in preparing the draw.
“It’s a challenging process in any season however this year presented additional challenges with Easter and Anzac Day falling within the same week. We we’re able to maintain the traditional Anzac rivalry games whilst also supporting Corowa, Myrtleford and Yarrawonga with home fixtures during the busy tourism periods over Easter and Queen’s Birthday”
